Whenever you see Sony’s PlayStation 3 in a particular news article, you can count on the article being bad news for Sony 99% of the time. I’m not going to talk about how much worse the console is doing today though, instead I’m going to bring up a piece of good news: the PlayStation Network user base has reached the 25 million members. Gamasutra reported that the average PlayStation Network user spends 56 minutes exploring the virtual world. The majority of the population consists of males between the ages of 18 to 35.
The report can serve as an untapped source of revenue for Sony. The avatar-based virtual world was available to PS3 owners since December, and still remains in an open beta-testing phase. I have not tried the service yet, nor do I know when the beta-testing will end, but with 25 million members, there has to be something that attracts all these users. It only goes to show that there is still potential and hope for the PS3.
