HackDo arcade games make good movies? I’m not too sure of the answer myself, but Universal Pictures apparently thought they did. The film production company beat out three other parties in an auction for the film rights to Asteroids, the classic arcade game released in 1979. Atari Inc. CEO Jim Wilson had previously spoken about the company’s plans to boost profits by licensing out some of its arcade classics that have been around for decades, which is the main reason why Atari chose to auction off the film rights to Asteroids.

Personally, I don’t think making a movie off of an arcade classic is a good idea. Asteroids did not have much of a storyline to begin with, which makes it hard for me to believe that a good idea can come out of such a thing. The movie would also be, to no one’s surprise, incredibly similar to Star Wars. Great.
